When most people think of taking a family vacation to California, Bakersfield is not the first place that comes to mind … or the second … or the third. That's understandable as Bakersfield isn't known for its Tourist Attractions. But it's certainly worth checking out.

Unlike many other vacation destinations which are known for one or two particular things, the attractions in Bakersfield are many and they are mostly close to each other. For the explorer buried in all of us Bakersfield is a little gem, providing the chance to examine a variety of different walks of life all found in one distinctive location.

For a little history lesson, you can begin with the West Kern Oil Museum where visitors will be immersed in the fascinating story covering the history of oil mining in the area. Then there's the Murray Family Farm, located not far away, where adults and children alike will enjoy some good old fashioned, get-your-hands-dirty farming. And if you have children that are a little older, say 8 years old and up, be sure and take them to the Buena Vista Museum of Natural History. Their imaginations will be sparked by fossils which were discovered right in the foothills of Bakersfield.

Still looking for more things to do in Bakersfield? There's the Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation Area. A mere 25 miles southwest of Bakersfield, this is the place to go for a day of water-skiing, boating, and white-water rafting. In reality, Buena Vista is composed of two lakes joined together: little Lake Evans to the west and the bigger Lake Webb to the east.

Need a family friendly hotel in Bakersfield? The Four Points by Sheraton Bakersfield is an excellent choice. Reasonably priced, it is a three-star hotel with an outdoor pool and courteous, helpful staff.

Feeling a bit hungry after a hard day viewing the many attractions in Bakersfield? Well, the Hungry Hunter Steakhouse features American and New American food, seafood and steaks galore. The prices are reasonable and the food is great. If you’re more interested in Italian food, Italian/Mediterranean/Pasta? Try Luigi's Restaurant and Delicatessen or Uricchio's Trattoria!

Then, after a good night's rest, you awaken bright and early in the morning ready to tackle some more of Bakersfield's Tourist Attractions. And make no mistake about it, there are plenty more to go. In fact, it can be truthfully said that Bakersfield has a little bit of something for everyone. So hurry on up and get out there and enjoy it!
